Position Advantage for Card Counters

April 20, 2024·5 min read

Many people overlook position advantage in blackjack, assuming any seat is equivalent. But for card counters, the last seat at the table — known as "third base" — is the most powerful position.

Why Position Matters

The last player to act before the dealer has the most information available:

  • All other players' cards are visible
  • The remaining deck composition is better known
  • Decisions can more accurately reflect the true deck state

Third Base Control

If the deck is high-card-rich and you are the last player to act, you can stand on hands where other players might hit. This preserves high cards for the dealer's hand, increasing the probability the dealer busts.

Conversely, if a novice player is last to act and takes cards meant to bust the dealer, your card counting advantage is undermined.

Team Play

When playing in a team of card counters, all players benefit from having one skilled counter at third base. The last player's decisions essentially become a control mechanism for the whole table.

This was the approach used by the famous MIT Blackjack Team — coordinated table positions combined with counting gave them a devastating edge against casinos.

Casino Awareness

Casinos are well aware of this dynamic. Dealers and pit bosses pay extra attention to third base players, watching for suspicious betting patterns. Online blackjack eliminates this concern entirely — making it an ideal environment for card counters.

Practical Tip
